Frequently asked questions
WHAT IS YOUR INVESTMENT PHILOSOPHY?
Biltmore Wealth Advisors (BWA) believes that the best approach to investing is one that involves active investment management. Our conviction to active investing stems from our belief that the markets are always evolving and what may have worked well 1, 2, or 5 years ago won't necessarily be as advantageous to the investor in today's always changing financial markets.
WHAT DOES "ACTIVE MANAGEMENT" MEAN?
Many Financial Planners and/or Advisors utilize an antiquated "buy and hold" approach to investing which consists of, generally speaking, buying a basket of stocks and bonds and/or mutual funds for their client and maintaining a fixed asset allocation (as prescribed by their individual investment objective) over the long run. In other words, they make very few changes, if any, to your retirement portfolio over time.
As an example, the asset allocation for a moderate-style buy-and-hold investor might consist of the following: 50% stocks / 40% bonds / 10% cash. The buy-and-hold investor will hold the same investments within the 50% stock allocation over the short and long term riding out the volatile ups and downs in the market. However, an active investor believes that opportunities exist within the short and long term to capitalize on a security's movement (up or down).
Furthermore, an Active investor has the ability to make money in rising or declining markets.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?
Mr. Miller, the Principal for Biltmore Wealth Advisors has been working in the industry since 1992. He has worked on all three (3) sides in the industry: 1) the buy-side, 2) the sell-side, and 3) independent-side. Biltmore Wealth Advisors is an independent Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) firm.
DOES YOUR FIRM HAVE AN ACCOUNT SIZE MINIMUM?
Yes. Our minimum account size is $250,000 in assets under management - per household. Hence, we pool a given household's accounts (i.e. Trusts, IRA's, Individual Accounts, Joint Accounts, etc...) together when calculating the minimum during the application process.
HOW DOES BILTMORE WEALTH ADVISORS GET PAID?
We are a fee-only Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) and the firm is registered with the State of Arizona.
The firm’s fee-only compensation structure is based on a flat percentage billed against the amount of assets that we professionally manage for our clients. We collect no commissions for managing our client's retirement. We believe that this approach to compensation aligns our interest with that of our clients. Our billing adheres to the industry standard of
WHAT DOES FEE-ONLY MEAN?
It means that we are not paid for any trading and/or other commissions on any investments that we purchase and/or sell for our clients. Hence, whether we make 10 trades or 100 trades in our client's portfolio for a given year, we are only compensated from our fee-only compensation structure, as described above.
WHO TAKES CUSTODY OF YOUR CLIENT'S ASSETS?
The majority of our client's assets are held in custody at TD Ameritrade Institutional - which is one of the largest custodians in the United States and a trusted financial resource by investors worldwide.
DO YOU KEEP ANY OF YOUR CLIENT'S ASSETS IN-HOUSE?
Absolutely not! All of our client's money is held at a neutral third-party custodian such as TD Ameritrade Institutional.
HOW OFTEN DOES YOUR CLIENT'S RECEIVE STATEMENTS?
All of our clients receive either paper or electronic monthly statements directly from TD Ameritrade Institutional as well as online access to their performance reports for all of their investments (those held at Biltmore Wealth Advisors as well as elsewhere at other banking institutions). The firm uses third-party software program that allows the client to aggregate all of their finances (investments, bank accounts, loans, credit cards, etc…) under one convenient log-in.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU LOOK AT YOUR CLIENT'S INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO?
We review all of client's portfolios on a weekly basis. We also do an in-house review of all of our investment models every six (6) months to ensure that our strategy is in-line with current trends in today's volatile financial markets.
YOUR WEBSITE INDICATES THAT YOU ARE ADVOCATES FOR USING ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS?
Many Financial Advisors only invest in two (2) of the three (3) asset classes: stocks and bonds. At Biltmore Wealth Advisors we invest in all three (3) asset classes: stocks, bonds, and alternative investments.
Alternative Investments (A/I) can mean different things to different people. Generally speaking, A/I's are an asset class that represent a very large group of investments such as commodities, hedge funds, managed futures, real estate, private equity, private debt, etc... Each client’s investment portfolio is customized based on their unique risk tolerance, age, investment knowledge, and portfolio size.
Historically, A/I's have a very low (sometimes even negative) correlation to traditional investments like stocks and bonds. In other words, A/I's do not traditionally move in the same direction as stocks and bonds. Used correctly, A/I's have the ability to mitigate or minimize the volatility in one's investment portfolio without having to sacrifice return.
